St Mary's - Isles of Scilly
St Mary’s is the largest of the Scilly Isles with nearly seventy five percent of Scilly’s residents and is dominated by the capital Hugh Town, the only town on the islands. Hugh town is fringed by the sandy beaches of Porthcressa and Town Beach.
The island’s main harbour in Hugh Town has all manner of shops, restaurants and pubs along the narrow streets and the island’s museum can also be found here. In the morning the harbour gets busy when the all inter island boats depart for the smaller islands.
Beyond Hugh Town 30 miles of nature trails and coastal paths can be found. Gentle farmland fills the inner island with the highest hill top measuring 49 metres. For the sporty and active visitor, a nine-hole golf course stands dramatically on the cliff edge and water activities such as kayaking, sailing and wind surfing are popular.
St Mary’s offers something for everyone and is a great base from which to explore the rest of Scilly.
