Tresco - Isles of Scilly
The second largest island is a single, private estate, which makes it unique amongst the Isles of Scilly. The landscape is fascinating with ruined castes and woodland, as well as quiet sandy beaches and captivating rock pools. Explore on foot or hire a bike and cycle around the island, but be sure to book this in advance.
Tresco’s coastline is made up of gently curving beaches of soft white sand that are never crowded and are perfect for picnics and spotting the migratory birds which flock to the island.The estate has a successful traditionally run farm and one of the world’s horticultural gems, The Abbey Gardens. Abbey Gardens is a sub-tropical wonderland, home to many rare plants that cannot be grown anywhere else in Britain.
As well as the wildlife and beaches, Tresco offers other attractions. Visit the great cave of Piper’s Hole, the castle ruins and the Bronze Age tomb that stands on Tregarthen Hill in the north of the island. Or head to Valhalla to the collection of ships figureheads retrieved from local wrecks.
